Pop Warner football teams, cheer squads, coaches, parents, and other staff braved the hottest weather of the year on Saturday July 22 to raise money for their program in the annual "Hike-a-thon."

With plenty of water stops set up along the courses, enthusiastic kids, and participants hiked from Walnut Grove Park to Mission Hills High School.

Midget division teams (ages 10 to 14) hiked a 6.5 mile route, Mighty-Mite and Pee-Wee divisions (ages 7 to 11) hiked 4 miles, and flag football teams (younger boys) hiked a shorter 2 miles starting at Richland Elementary School.

While a few mothers and younger children decided not to complete the course, the athletes and coaches all seemed to tolerate it well.  Some even enjoyed it.  It was the first official event opportunity the kids have participated in as a team, and most seemed to enjoy it.

Neil Anderson, a Baron junior pee wee player said, "That hike was easy, I'd do it again."  San Marcos Pop Warner is looking forward to a great season in 2006, with higher enrollment than ever before.

Congratulations to Richard Wood, a Jr. Midget player for the Dukes, who raised $650 to support the league!  Our second place goes to Jessie Gassaway, a Jr. Midget player also from the Dukes, who raised $641.  CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE ON A SUCCESSFUL EVENT.
