San Marcos Pop Warner 2007 Season Photography Contest and Exhibit
Every team and cheer squad has one hard-working parent media coordinator,
sometimes even a team of photographers, taking pictures not only of their
child, but of all the players/cheerleaders during the season. These
hard-working volunteers work hard hunting for the best shot on the field,
often spend countless hours sorting through hundreds of photos from each
game, post select shots on websites for all the families to enjoy,
and sometimes spend many more hours editing photos, managing websites, etc.
They always work hard to represent as many players as possible. This year
we decided to showcase the hard work of these volunteers by sponsoring a
photography contest and public photo show.
The results of our contest can be viewed now in a web album at
http://picasaweb.google.com/SMPWnews/SMPWPhotoContest. Each media
coordinator was asked to submit 4 photos: two action; one candid, and one of
their choice. All photos had to be of players or cheerleaders in uniform,
none could be obviously posed, and two (at least one action) had to have at
least 4 recognizable players in them. Entries were judged by four
independent professional and semi-professional photographers. The judges
were instructed that action shots should be dynamic and make you "feel like
you're there" (think Sports Illustrated Magazine). Candids were judged on
character, either from a portrait perspective (facial expressions), or
personal interactions among players/cheerleaders. Media Coordinator's
choice photos were judged for uniqueness, and/or high quality in the other
two categories; bbasically on how much judges liked the shot for whatever
reason. Artistic composition/manipulation, photographic quality, and
originality was considered in all shots. Each judge rated photographs on a
scale of 1-10, and places were awarded based on the average score.
Tie-breakers were based on the lowest score received. The top three highest
scoring photos were awarded places 1-3, the next three highest were awarded
"Honorable Mention."
These photos and more will also be displayed at the San Marcos Community
Center Hearth Gallery rotating art exhibit (http://www.ci.san-marcos.ca.us/departments.asp?id=1622
) for all of June and July this summer, so stop by and check it out!
Not all teams submitted photographs in time for the contest, however all
teams will be represented with at least 4 photos in the exhibit. Look for
an announcement in the North County Times community calendar in May.
