Ariath Morales Remembered

Four San Marcos Pop Warner teams and their fans paused between games at Mission Hills High School on Saturday, October 7, to remember their fallen teammate Ariath Morales. "Ari" passed away unexpectedly on April 11, 2006.  Ari's coach from last season, Don Hall, returned to make the presentation.  The tribute took place at 2:50 pm, between the San Marcos Barons-Penasquitos Bandits and San Marcos Lords-Rancho Bernardo Broncos games.   The four teams and their fans gathered to pay their respects, bowed their heads for a moment of silence, and presented Ari's family with a mounted and framed 2006-season #17 jersey bearing the black memorial patch worn this season.  For the 2006 season, all San Marcos Pop Warner football players and cheerleaders displayed a black patch with the number 17 in memory of Ari.  Football players wore the patch on their game jerseys; cheerleaders displayed it on their equipment bags. In addition, no player on any San Marcos Pop Warner team wore the number 17 this season.

2005 was Ari's first season of Pop Warner football.  As a ten-year-old new to Pop Warner, Ariath played for the Junior Pee Wee Division 1 Cavaliers.  The highlight of Ariath's season came at San Dieguito when, late in the game, Ari was placed at middle linebacker.  A goal line situation developed, and when a hole opened up between the guards, Ari rushed forward and made a resoundingly perfect form tackle; stuffing the runner.  Ari's debut on the tackle chart was most convincing!  Ari is remembered fondly by his coaches for his bright disposition and constant determination; Ari clearly loved to play football. He never missed a practice, and was eager to participate and learn.  Ariath's teammates showed their love for him and support for his family by attending his April memorial service in their game jerseys.
